Youth Transitions Unit

Teaching independence

Youth Transition Unit (YTU) works with youth ages of 15-19 who are transitioning onto independent living. Youth who are transitioning often have little connection with the community. YTU aims to build those connections through one-on-one mentorship. Mentorship includes planning and implementing one-on-one activities and programs that may be educational or recreational with a heavy focus on life skill building and connecting youth to resources. The needs will vary between youth, however the focus will be on completing benchmarks and workbook activities. Life skill areas worked on will include: all area’s concerned with housing (searching for apartments, understanding a lease, budgeting), health and hygiene, job experience, community connections, emergency planning, and goal setting. Youth are referred to the YTU program through the Ministry of Social Services.
